According to the General Administration of Customs for the Far East of Russia, since the beginning of this year, imports of Chinese goods through the Waibaikal port have increased by three times year-on-year.
As of April 17, 250,000 tons of commodities, mainly parts, equipment, machine tools, tires, fruits and vegetables, as well as daily necessities, have been brought in.
In 2023, the import of equipment from China increased five times, and a total of 9,966 units of equipment including dump trucks, buses, forklifts, tractors, road construction machinery, cranes, etc.
At present, 300 goods vehicles cross the border daily at the Outer Baikal crossing, despite its capacity of 280 goods vehicles.
In order to ensure that the port does not run intermittently, the relevant person in charge will reassign posts according to the work intensity and arrange people to take night duty. It currently takes 25 minutes for a lorry to clear customs.
The Waibegarsk International Highway Port is the largest road port on the Russia-China border. It is part of the “Waibegarsk-Manzhouli” port, through which 70% of the trade between Russia and China passes.
On March 9, Vladimir Petrakov, acting Prime Minister of Russia’s Wabeykal Krai government, said that the Wabeykal International Highway crossing will be completely rebuilt to increase its capacity.
